Old Parish of the Indigenous

According to tradition, the chapel was built a few days after the imprinting of Our Lady of Guadalupe on the tilma of Saint Juan Diego in 1531.

The original hermitage was rebuilt in 1532-1533. Alongside this chapel, tradition says that it was the place where Saint Juan Diego lived during the last part of his life, from 1531 to 1548 (on the eastern side of the Old Parish Church of the Indigenous, there is a cement cross marking the site).

Inside the chapel, he recounted the dialogues he had with Our Lady of Guadalupe.

This chapel was the place where millions of Indigenous people were converted upon seeing the miraculous image. The chapel was used to safeguard the image starting December 26, 1531. Tradition tells that people would touch the image, and incense and torches were used to enter the chapel. Over time, two churches were built, but no foundations remain (in 1556 and 1622). This last church housed the original tilma and sacred image of Our Lady of Guadalupe from 1695 to 1709.

According to the chroniclers, in May 1544, Juan Bernardino was buried here, and in June 1548, Saint Juan Diego was buried as well. In 1709, the original tilma was moved to the Old Basilica of Guadalupe. The Old Parish Church of the Indians deteriorated so much that it was not until 1998 that it was reopened with a new roof.

On the north side or rear of the Old Parish Church of the Indians is the famous Cazahuate tree, which tradition also claims is the site where the Virgin appeared to Saint Juan Diego. Enter through the altar, and you will see the floor structures of the first chapel from 1531. On the wall where there is a frame with the painted image of Our Blessed Mother, it is exactly where the sacred image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was publicly displayed for veneration.
